Activities and things to do in Betty's Bay and surrounding areas:
Betty's Bay is best known for it's stunning beaches, amazing mountain ranges and wonderful nature, being part of South Africa's first internationally recognised UNESCO Biosphere Nature Reserve - The Kogelberg.
- Whale watching between July and December and Dolphins seen all year round. See the miracle of new born whales, courtship displays and the occasional visiting Orca. Enjoy the Hermanus Whale Festival attracting visitors world wide!
- Visit Stony Point breeding colony, clearly signposted from R44 Clarence Drive, Betty's Bay, Cape Overberg. Here you will see the endangered Jackass Penguins, one of only three South African breeding colonies that are shore-based. At an abandoned whaling station site in Betty's Bay you will see a breeding ground, naturally selected by the penguins . The circle of life is best observed just after sunrise or just before sunset when the birds return from their 20km fishing expedition.
- Visit the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, just 100km from Cape Town, between Gordon's Bay and Betty's Bay, lying between the mountains and the sea. Dedicated to the natural shrubland, the peaceful gardens consist of vast mountain slopes, cavernous gorges, forest, wetlands, waterfalls, coastal dunes and fynbos(fine bushland), a distinctive type of vegetation found only on the southern tip of Africa. As well as the magical display of plants and vegetation, the gardens are also host to an enormous amount of wild life. Around 60 species of birds, baboons, dassies, otters, mongeese and even nocturnal porcupines and leopards have been sighted.
- If you're interested in wine, then you will be close to the amazing wine routes in Hermanus, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. There is a lot of wine tasting to be done!
- Walk the Palmiet River Trail in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve: The River Trail is on the R44 between Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond, about 100kms from Cape Town. Located in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, this walk is one that should not be missed. The trail runs along the river where, in a few of the first pools you are able to swim. This is approximately a four hour walk but the amazing scenery and nature along the way make this a very worthwhile journey.
- Swimming, snorkelling and diving at the pristine beaches or the many hidden coves and natural lakes. As well as Scuba-diving, shark cage diving, sailing, kayaking, boating and surfing. You could also try spear fishing, angling and crayfishing.
- Kiteboarding, Sand/Dune Boarding, Mountain Biking, Climbing are just some of the many land based activities and sports. Also available in the area are world class golf courses, which boast such players as Jack Niklaus, Samuel L Jackson and Ronan Keating.
